Wuxtry Records, Swimming Pool Q’s to Commemorate 40 Years

Longstanding metro Atlanta record store Wuxtry Records recently turned 40 years old. To celebrate, the Decatur music retailer is throwing a concert party at the Vista Room (2836 Lavista Road) on Friday, November 9th starring The Swimming Pool Q’s, who are themselves celebrating their own 40th anniversary!

In fact, one of the Pool Q’s very first gigs was at the grand opening of Wuxtry’s Decatur location on Sept. 30, 1978, as documented in this photo by Richard Perez. (The Athens Wuxtry location had opened its doors two years earlier – and is still open as well!)

“The name of our store came from an old Jack Kirby comic, Boy Commandos, [which had] a newsboy yelling, ‘Wuxtry! Wuxtry!’” notes store founder and owner Mark Methe. “It was Brooklyn dialect, or slang, for ‘Extra! Extra! Read all about it!’”

Tickets for the upcoming show (which will also feature a performance by the band 3, which includes guitarist Ken Schenck, bassist Max Koshewa – both former members of the mid-80s Atlanta post-punk band 86 – and steady Wuxtry employee Richard Kuykendall on drums)  are $20 in advance and $25 day-of-show. Each of the first 200 tickets will come with two free drinks.
