Vic Chesnutt Songwriter of the Year Award Established

The Rotary Club of the Classic City of Athens has established the Vic Chesnutt Songwriter of the Year Award to recognize and celebrate the songwriting talents working and residing in the greater Athens community. Named in honor of the late singer-songwriter Chesnutt, whose acclaimed songs earned the respect and admiration of numerous fans, critics and fellow artists (R.E.M., Widespread Panic, Cowboy Junkies, Kristin Hersh, Indigo Girls and even Madonna are a few of those who’ve covered his material), the award will be given annual to tunesmiths of all genres.

This year’s inaugural ceremony event will take place Thursday, May 11th at The Foundry, located adjacent to the Graduate Athens hotel on E. Dougherty Street near downtown Athens. Additionally, the 40 Watt Club will be hosting a two-night, multi-artist tribute to Vic April 14th and 15th, in conjunction with New West Records’ vinyl reissues of many of Chesnutt’s albums from the 1990s.

Nominations for 2017 Vic Chesnutt Songwriter of the Year Award can be made online until March 31st. For more information, go to directory-online.com/Websites/ClassicCityRotary/Pages/VicChesnuttSongwriterAward.html.
