String Band Fest & BBQ/Blues Fest Coming to Downtown Calhoun

Calling all fiddlers, pickers, pluckers, buck dancers and other players and fans of old-timey string band mountain music: the Tenth Annual Georgia String Band Festival will take place in downtown Calhoun, Georgia on April 29th and 30th. The opening night will feature West Virginia’s Davis & Elkins Appalachian Music Ensemble performing traditional music and dance in the Harris Arts Center at 7 p.m., Friday, April 29th.

Inspired by a namesake event begun in Calhoun in 1924, the Gordon County Fiddlers Convention continues the tradition as part of the Georgia String Band Festival’s second day, offering competitions in Traditional Singing, Buck Dance, Banjo, String Band and Fiddle for $1,900 in prize money. Admission is $10 (children under 12 are free), with no additional charge to compete, although participants must be at least 15 years of age. The doors open at 11 a.m., registration starts at 12:30 p.m., and the games begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 30th in the Harris Arts Center in downtown Calhoun.

All of this great old time music coincides with Calhoun’s BBQ, Boogie & Blues Festival, featuring live music, food, beer & wine gardens and more on the downtown streets that same weekend.
