Stipe, Neutral Milk Hotel Contribute to Colbert’s Farewell Report

Michael Stipe helped send off Stephen Colbert on the farewell night of Comedy Central’s popular late-night satirical political show The Colbert Report, and the show’s final credits rolled to backing music by the Athens-based band Neutral Milk Hotel.

Stipe was part of an all-star sing-a-long of “We’ll Meet Again,” alongside an oddball combination of over 50 personalities that also included James Franco, Cyndi Lauper, Henry Kissinger, Barry Manilow, George Lucas, Tom Brokaw, Randy Newman, Willie Nelson, Kareem Abdul-Jabar, Big Bird and the Cookie Monster.

Later, when the final credits rolled, they weren’t paired with the usual theme music but instead “Holland 1945” from Neutral Milk Hotel’s 1998 album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. Colbert, who takes over for the retiring David Letterman next year on The Late Show, has cited the song as one of his favorites.
