On Sat. Feb. 7, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings will headline a benefit concert at Augusta’s Bell Auditorium and the very next evening, she and the band will be up for “Best R&B Album” honors at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards, held in Los Angeles at the Staple Center.
Give The People What They Want was released on Daptone Records in January 2014 following a lengthy delay after Jones was diagnosed and treated for pancreatic cancer. The album went on to receive huge critical praise and the band toured around the world non-stop, seeing their front woman perform with a renewed purpose and passion. The Grammy nomination caps off a year filled with well-deserved triumph after another.
The homecoming concert on Feb. 7, presented by the University Health Care Foundation, benefits the UHCS Smart Heart Fund, which helps provide free community screenings, heart and vascular screenings for area student athletes, as well as for public safety first responders including firefighters, police officers and EMTs.
