Sharon Jones Documentary Premieres at the Toronto Film Festival

The documentary film Miss Sharon Jones!, directed by Barbara Kopple, will premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on September 11th.

The film, the first official documentary about the Augusta-born soul singer, follows her battle against pancreatic cancer amid the build-up and release of her sixth album with the Dap-Kings, Give the People What They Want, along with the group’s triumphant return to live performances following Jones’ diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy and subsequent recovery. The movie, which indieWIRE calls “a film that makes you want to stand up and dance,” will also open the DOC NYC festival that runs Nov. 12th through 19th in New York City.

Meanwhile, four cuts from Sharon and the Dap-Kings, including one previously only available on a 45, are included on Daptone Gold II, a new collection of favorites and rarities from the artists on Daptone Records, to be released on Sept. 18th.
