Robert Schneider will open for his friends Neutral Milk Hotel on what the latter is calling the final leg of its reunion tour, which began in the fall of 2013. Meanwhile, aside from a handful of one-off shows, it will be the first tour for Schneider (a founder of the Elephant 6 musical collective along with NMH’s Jeff Mangum and The Olivia Tremor Control’s Bill Doss and Will Cullen Hart) since he left the music scene three years ago to pursue a Ph.D. in Mathematics at Emory University in Decatur, Georgia.
This month, Schneider and Benjamin Phelen (who joined Schneider’s band The Apples in Stereo in 2010) have published a lengthy article in literary magazine The Believer about their recent visit to India to learn more about the mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, who made extraordinary contributions to mathematical analysis and number theory despite a short life (he died in 1920 at age 32) and little formal training.
Schneider, who produced and performed on both of Neutral Milk Hotel’s albums, will join the band for shows beginning June 3rd in Eugene, Oregon and ending June 11th in Petaluma, California. Comments Schneider, “I have missed playing shows, and traveling with my friends. This is going to be awesome.”
