While it’s a safe guess that none of the surviving members could even afford one, Pylon’s 1979 song “Cool” is being used in new TV commercials for the 2016 Lexus RX. Odd as it may seem, the song – one of the most beloved by fans of the Athens-based post-punk art/dance/rock group – works really well as a soundtrack to “modern luxury.” Watch it here:
Sadly, Pylon effectively ceased to be an active group with the 2009 death of guitarist Randy Bewley, just as their notoriety was getting a boost with the reissue of their first two albums via the respected DFA Records label. Vocalist Vanessa Briscoe Hay, however, has recently begun fronting a Pylon tribute band called Pylon Reenactment Society. The rest of the lineup consists of fellow Athens musicians (and hardcore Pylon fans) Kay Stanton, Jason NeSmith, Joe Rowe and Damon Denton. They’ll be doing a brief Southeastern tour with Denver trio Dressy Bessy in February that includes shows at The EARL in Atlanta on February 19th, and the 40 Watt Club in Athens the following night.
