Phillip Phillips Seeking to Void Contract with Idol Producers

Eleventh season American Idol winner Phillip Phillips has filed a petition with the California Labor Commission seeking to nullify his contract with Idol producer 19 Entertainment, alleging that the agreement is “oppressive” and “fatally conflicted.”

As is common practice on most of those television talent search series, Phillips signed a deal with the producers before his victory giving them a large amount of control over his career decisions, not to mention a generous chunk of his income. But Phillips asserts that 19 Entertainment has not always acted in his best interest. He and his legal team are banking their hopes on California’s Talent Agencies Act, a law that requires only licensed talent agents be able to procure employment for clients.
