Atlanta band Mastodon had been nominated for Grammy Awards three times prior to this year – in 2007, 2012 and 2015 – but each time went home empty handed. This year they were nominated again – their latest album Emperor of Sand was up for Best Rock Album, and its song “Sultan’s Curse” was nominated in the Best Metal Performance category. Philly’s The War on Drugs took the Best Rock Album award, but “Sultan’s Curse” won the Best Metal Performance Grammy.
Three members of the quartet were on hand to accept the award (given during the pre-telecast portion of the ceremony), but guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds had to skip it, as he is at home recovering from injuries incurred in a recent motorcycle spill.
Obviously his bandmates and fans are counting on him being healed in time for the group’s just-announced co-headlining tour with Primus, which begins May 6th in Denver. The tour rumbles into Atlanta’s Fox Theatre on May 16th.
