Prog-metal monsters Mastodon have completed work on their newest album, an opus titled Emperor of Sand. Reprise Records will unveil it to the masses on March 31st.
Perhaps mightier and meatier than anything they have ever recorded, Emperor of Sand is a conceptual album on which all of the compositions are linked together as a complete storyline about a man who is given a death sentence from a desert king and wanders a wasteland before simultaneously perishing and being saved. Drummer Brann Dailor told Rolling Stone that it’s a symbolic mortality tale representing getting cancer and going through chemotherapy.
The quartet recorded Emperor of Sand with Georgia-bred producer Brendan O’Brien, who also helmed the band’s 2011 album Crack the Skye.
