Lizz Wright’s first album in five years, Freedom & Surrender, is also her first to land at the top of Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz album chart.
The Hahira, Georgia native has earned critical raves for her latest album, her fifth. The Wall Street Journal calls it “her most vibrant performance to date: controlled yet as swinging, prodding and persuading as the lyrics and melodies demand,” while The New York Times notes that “Wright has found has found a new sensual register as an artist.”
Wright, who recently relocated to Asheville, North Carolina after stints in Atlanta, New York and Seattle, is wrapping up a string of West Coast and Midwest tour dates this week, culminating with two shows at Chicago’s City Winery on Sept. 25th. She’ll then prepare to embark on a European jaunt beginning Oct. 16th, taking her to Stockholm, Brussels, Amsterdam, Berlin and elsewhere.
