The atmospheric song that provides the soundtrack to a new 60-second teaser trailer released April 9th by HBO promoting the upcoming second season of its show True Detective is prompting a rumble of online buzz. But although the cable network hasn’t officially revealed the song title or singer’s name (only that it’s an original composition made for the show), tweets that same afternoon from former Athens singer Lera Lynn and country music royalty Roseanne Cash spilled the beans that it’s Lynn’s new song written and performed with Cash and producer/musician T Bone Burnett, the show’s musical supervisor. It also seems the network views the speculation about the song as a plus and intends to keep information about it a mystery as long as possible, as both Lynn’s and Cash’s tweets were deleted shortly after they were posted.
Whether the track will be used in episodes of True Detective’s new season (or even if it will be the show’s new theme song) is unknown at this point, as is the possibility of any other music from Lynn being used in the program. But it’s clear from the reception to the song that once word spreads that it’s the relatively little-known Lynn – whose second independent album The Avenues was released last year – she’s in for a significant career boost.
The second season of True Detective premieres June 21st.
