Athens-based musician, singer and songwriter Kishi Bashi will release his third solo album Sonderlust on September 16th via Joyful Noise Recordings.
Recorded with the help of producer Chris Taylor (Grizzly Bear), engineer Pat Dillet (Angelique Kidjo, David Byrne) and drummer Matt Chamberlain (Tori Amos, Soundgarden), Sonderlust is described as Kaoru Ishibashi’s most intimate and artistically adventurous work to date. In an interview on NPR’s All Songs Considered, Ishibashi said, “As I sat down to write songs last summer, I went to all my usual conduits of creation: violin loops, guitar, piano, and I came up with the musical equivalent of tunes. I tried to create orchestral pop recordings that I assumed were my forte, and in turn, I found myself standing in front of a creative wall of frightening heights…” The creative uncertainty, combined with changes in his personal life challenged him to experiment with new musical directions and dig deeply into his soul for lyrical inspiration. “I questioned everything about what it means to love and desire… the difference between loving someone and being in love.”
Kishi Bashi’s nationwide tour promoting Sonderlust kicks off September 27th at the Georgia Theatre in Athens, and wraps up just over a month later, November 2nd at Atlanta’s Variety Playhouse. The album’s first single from, “Say Yeah,” can heard here:
