Athens-born improvisational and largely instrumental ensemble Japancakes are returning after a lengthy absence – and with a lead vocalist this time.
Out May 6th, the self-released album Japancakes is the group’s first full-length album since 2007, which found them issuing both an album of original music (Giving Machines) and a track-by-track instrumental cover of My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless album. Perhaps foreshadowing their current direction, their 2009 EP Behind the Mountains featured lovely lead vocals by Orenda Fink (Azure Ray).
2016’s Japancakes adds vocalist and lyricist Carrie Clough, formerly of the band Call and Response, to the core of guitarist Eric Berg, bassist Nick Bielli (Hayride), cellist Heather McIntosh (composer of music for films including Z for Zachariah and Compliance), pedal steel guitarist John Neff and drummer Brant Rackley. The various members are currently split geographically between Athens and Los Angeles.
