Multi-GRAMMY-winning artists Kristian Bush (Sugarland), John Driskell Hopkins (Zac Brown Band), and Emily Saliers (Indigo Girls) were all on hand when The Recording Academy ® Atlanta Chapter hosted its In The Mix: Songwriters in the Round at Dixie Tavern in Marietta on March 3, 2015. Hopkins, who shared that the Dixie Tavern was a regular and loyal venue for Zac Brown Band on its way up, served as moderator for the evening and kept attendees engaged throughout the night. Atlanta chapter members from around the state attended the standing-room-only event.
Each of the artists played three songs and explained the stories behind them. Bush discussed his transition from being in the group, Sugarland, to playing solo. He also talked about how initially joining The Recording Academy changed the way he looked at music and impacted his career path before singing his hit “Baby Girl.” Half-way through the Indigo Girls’ timeless hit, “Closer to Fine,” Saliers was joined by Bush and Hopkins on harmonies, a collaboration that was a highlight of the night. The impromptu harmonies continued as Bush and Saliers backed up Hopkins on “I Will Lay Me Down,” a song featured on his 2013 solo album with Balsam Range.
Bush and Hopkins both serve on the Board of Governors for the Atlanta Chapter. Their fellow elected leaders Brandon Bush (keyboards), J Fly (drums) and Diane Durrett (vocals) took the stage together for a show-closer that exemplified the camaraderie and shared passion for music evident in the Dixie Tavern throughout the evening.
