Laid Back Festival curator and headliner Gregg Allman assembled five concerts in five markets this year following his inaugural Laid Back Festival at Jones Beach last year. The Atlanta installment on Sat. Oct. 29, 2016 at Lakewood Amphitheatre features Allman’s band plus three Georgia-based acts – Blackberry Smoke, Michelle Malone and Mother’s Finest – along with with Rock and Roll Hall of Famers ZZ Top, Jaimoe’s Jasssz Band, Gabriel Kelley and Stonerider.
The Atlanta date, originally scheduled for May 7, was moved to Oct. 29 after ZZ Top bassist Dusty Hill fractured his shoulder. At the time, Allman said in a statement, “Laid Back Fest in Atlanta was coming up soon and I was getting really excited for it. Was going to be the first one of the five! No better place to start than in my home state. So I’m disappointed we have to postpone it, but there’s no way I’d want to do it without ZZ Top. Once we’re there, we’ll all be glad we waited.”
Then in August, it was announced that Allman was cancelling all of his tour dates through mid-October as he dealt with “serious health issues,” which later was revealed to be pneumonia. After recovering fully sooner than anticipated, however, he was able to perform at the Laid Back Festival in Red Rocks on Sept. 25. Allman has also been working on a new album, Southern Blood, a collection of originals and covers expected to be released in January.
Laid Back Festival is promoted as a “celebration of music, local food and brews.” Tickets are available via Live Nation.
