Several blocks of West Peachtree Street in midtown Atlanta have been given the honorary name Gladys Knight Highway in tribute to the pop/R&B singer who was born and raised in Atlanta.
The dedication ceremony was held on Tuesday, June 9th at the Georgia State Capitol in downtown Atlanta. The 71-year-old Motown legend was present, as well as her brother (and member of the Pips), Merald “Bubba” Knight, her husband, William McDowell, and other family members and close friends. State Resolution 441 emphasizes that “it is abundantly fitting and proper that the extraordinary accomplishments of this distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized by dedicating a road in her honor.”
Gladys Knight Highway is the section of West Peachtree Street running from its northernmost beginning at Peachtree Street south to where it crosses 14th Street.
