During the 43rd annual GMA Dove Awards held at Atlanta’s historic Fox Theatre on April 19, local singer, songwriter, worship leader and expectant mom Laura Story walked away with coveted awards for Song of the Year, as well as Song of the Year and Album of the Year in the Best Pop/Contemporary Song category. Atlantan Jamie-Grace was named New Artist of the Year and Lecrae, a Texan who now lives in the capital city, won Rap/Hip-Hop Song of the Year and Rap Hip/Hop Album of the Year for Rehab: The Overdose. Gainesville-based Karen Peck and New River received Southern Gospel Album of the Year honors for Reach Out and Chris Tomlin, worship leader at Passion City Church in Atlanta, won Worship and Praise Album of the Year for And If Our God is For Us…. Tomlin was also among the many Georgians including Lecrae, Mark Hall and Megan Garret from Casting Crowns, Mac Powell from Third Day and Francesca Battistelli who participated in the Special Event Album of the Year, The Story. The GMA Dove Awards were nationally televised on GMC-TV on April 24.
