Georgia Songwriter Suing Willie Nelson Over “Roll Me Up”

Ashley & Mark were an Atlanta-based singer-songwriter duo popular in the folky, post-Indigo Girls Decatur scene of the early 1990s. Now Ashley Wilson, along with the estate of Mark Reynolds, who died in 2004, is suing Willie Nelson, contending that his 2012 country hit “Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die” is an uncredited rewrite of an original song of the same name that the duo performed widely during the ‘90s and recorded on their 1991 CD Covertown.

The lawsuit asserts that one of Nelson’s co-writers, John Colgin, was familiar with the Ashley & Mark song due to living in Roswell while Reynolds was still alive and performing in the Atlanta area.
