Georgia Artists Among Record Store Day “Black Friday” Releases

An offshoot of the annual worldwide Record Store Day event every April promoting independent music retailers, the Black Friday edition occurs, naturally, the day after Thanksgiving. Like its springtime counterpart, the concept is to entice customers into record stores by offering limited-edition and collectible items (often reissues of out-of-print records, newly released archival material, items in special packaging or small pressings of new music).

Among the treats going on sale at your neighborhood record shop this Friday, Nov. 28th are many with Georgia ties, including a box set of vinyl singles originally issued by James Brown’s People Records (active in the early-to-mid ’70s); an album by Brown’s onetime backing band, The JB’s, recorded in 1970 but unreleased until now; a vinyl reissue of Little Richard’s second album (1958); a 10” green vinyl edition of OutKast’s debut single, “Player’s Ball”; a 12” picture disc for Mastodon’s song “The Motherload”; and a new 12” vinyl EP from The Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Try Rock ‘N’ Roll, featuring cover versions of a quartet of rock and country songs.
