Hailing from Atlanta (the city’s East Atlanta neighborhood, to be precise), Rapper J.I.D has signed with hip-hop artist/producer J. Cole’s Dreamville Records, distributed through Interscope.
A member of the Atlanta/Baltimore creative collective Spillage Village, which also includes DJ DarkKnight, hip-hop duo EarthGang (both from Atlanta), Jordxn Bryant and producer Hollywood JB (both from Baltimore), J.I.D released a mixtape, DiCaprio, in 2015.
The 25-year-old’s big break came through establishing a relationship with a childhood friend of J. Cole, whom he met while on tour with EarthGang. Cole subsequently became aware of J.I.D, which led to him being signed to the North Carolina rapper’s imprint.
J.I.D’s next full release will be titled The Never Story; in the meantime, the single and video for the song “Never” is out now. “I wrote the song at a point in my life when I had nothing and when my future seemed uncertain,” he says. “Throughout it all I had was my family and great people around me who allowed me to pen my pain and take a chance on pursuing my dreams.”
