David Barbe’s New Album a Solo Effort in Every Way

Veteran Athens musician and producer David Barbe has just released his third solo album, and first new album in seven years. 10th of Seas arrives via the Athens-based indie label Orange Twin Records.

10th of Seas marks a departure for Barbe in that he performed and recorded the entirety of it by himself, playing every instrument. “I wanted this record to be as close to the original source of inspiration as possible,” the former member of Sugar, Mercyland and Buzz Hungry explains. “I tried recording some of the songs with other people involved a few times, and it was better in some ways, but always seemed something was lost in translation. The communication became less personal. I felt like the emotional gravy is the glue, so I reverted to working like I did when I was a teenager making 4-tracks. Working fast. More feeling it. Less over-thinking it.” For live shows (which include Saturday, August 26th at the Grant Park Summer Shade festival in Atlanta), Barbe is currently performing these songs with a band called Inward Dream Ebb.

In addition to his bands and solo albums, Barbe, who operates the perpetually-busy Athens recording studio Chase Park Transduction, has also made a notable name for himself as a highly-respected producer, having worked on albums by Drive-By Truckers, Deerhunter, Harvey Milk, New Madrid, Son Volt, Bettye LaVette and many others.
