Described as a “stream of consciousness” journey through the Athens music scene, photographer Jason Thrasher’s book Athens Potluck is the subject of an active crowdfunding campaign, with publication expected this October through Athens-based Deeds Publishing.
Featuring 33 diverse musical acts, the project was an idea suggested by Jason’s wife Beth: Jason would choose one local musician to photograph and interview, asking five questions. Then that musician would pick the next musician to be photographed, asking their own questions, and so on. Thrasher began with Laura Carter of the indie-rock band Elf Power, who subsequently chose Will Hart of the Olivia Tremor Control, who chose Julian Koster (The Music Tapes, Neutral Milk Hotel), and so it went. Thrasher photographed each musician at their home or in the studio, with the interview questions written variously on album covers, vinyl records, books and works of art for the next artist. Other musicians featured in the hardcover, 424-page fine art book will include Michael Stipe, Patterson Hood, Vanessa Briscoe-Hay (Pylon), Jill Carnes (pictured) folk musician and archivist Art Rosenbaum and the late Ross Shapiro of The Glands.
