Bassist Richard Turner of Blackberry Smoke, along with two members of the band’s crew, are true lifesavers, rescuing three passengers from a burning car near El Paso, Texas on April 19th.
Turner, lighting director Chris Hathaway and bus driver Harry Wing chose not to fly back home to Atlanta after a recent tour ended in California, opting instead to take the band’s tour bus to enjoy the scenery of the Southwest and Southeast. But while on I-10 near El Paso at around 2 a.m., they came upon an overturned Dodge Charger in flames. They were the first to arrive upon the scene, so they jumped out of the bus and, while Wing used a fire extinguisher, Turner and Hathaway pulled a man, woman and young child from the burning vehicle.
Turner told country music website TheBoot.com, “If Harry hadn’t stopped, those people would be dead.”
