Black Tusk Bassist Dies After Motorcycle Accident

Jonathan Athon, the 32-year-old bass guitarist for Savannah-based metal band Black Tusk, died Sunday morning, Nov. 9th, from serious injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident two nights earlier.

Athon (center in the photo) was riding a Harley-Davidson Sportster on Friday night when he collided into the driver’s side of an Acura SUV driven by an 85-year-old man in downtown Savannah. Athon’s girlfriend, 26-year-old Emily Boutwell, was a passenger on the motorcycle, and suffered non life-threatening injuries. Athon, however, suffered irreparable brain damage. Savannah police are investigating the circumstances of the wreck.

Black Tusk were in Portland in September recording the followup to their 2013 EP Tend No Wounds. It is assumed the album will still be released as planned.
