Atlanta’s Rae Sremmurd Tops the Pop Chart for the First Time

Atlanta hip-hop act Rea Sremmurd captured the number one position on Billboard’s Hot 100 pop singles chart with their current hit “Black Beatles.” The track features Atlanta rapper Gucci Mane, and is the first Hot 100 number one for both acts.

Billboard’s Hot 100 blends sales, airplay and streaming data. “Black Beatles” was both the top-selling and most streamed song of the week, and advanced upward to number 44 in national radio airplay. The song also rose to the top of Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and Hot Rap Songs chart. “Black Beatles” is also the first Hot 100 number one for Atlanta’s Mike WiLL Made-It, the song’s producer and co-writer.

“Black Beatles” has become the unofficial soundtrack of the “Mannequin Challenge,” a new viral video craze in which participants try to stay motionless in funny or unsustainable positions. Rae Sremmurd (brothers Khalif “Swae Lee” Brown, 21, and Aaquil “Slim Jxmmi” Brown, 22) have even been known to perform a Mannequin Challenge stunt at their concerts, although they had nothing to do with instigating the trend.
