Athens Popfest gears up for its annual late summer festival with headliners include oddball New York no-wave dance band ESG, crunchy North Carolina college-rock survivors Superchunk, Elephant 6 mainstays Apples in Stereo, Stereolab vocalist Laetitia Sadier, Birmingham-born indie act Waxahatchee, minimalist hip-hopper Sneaks and psychedelic soul band The Veldt. The remainder of the offerings focus largely on adventurous Athens noiseniks (Elf Power, The Pylon Reenactment Society, Marshmallow Coast, White Violet, Wanda, Tunabunny, Feather Trade) alongside a splattering of likeminded acts from across the fruited plain.
The shows will take place at the Georgia Theatre, the 40 Watt Club, Little Kings and the World Famous, all within easy walking distance in downtown Athens. Tickets are just $12 to $14 per day or $55 for a full-four day pass. For more info, go to athenspopfest.com.
