The second of two Oxford American/Georgia Music Issue Launch Parties will be held on Wed., Dec. 9 at the Georgia Theatre in Athens with performances by Elf Power, The Historical Mercyland Abstract, Danny Hutchens and the Old Hoss Radbourne Experience, Shade and Ruby the Rabbitfoot. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door, available at georgiatheatre.com. Doors open at 8 p.m. with a 9 p.m. showtime.
The annual Southern Music issue of Oxford American devotes 16 pages to the Athens music community with contributors including David Barbe, Claire Campbell of Hope For AGoldenSummer, Don Chambers, Sara Campbell, Michelle Gilzenrat Davis, Justin Gage of Aquarium Drunkard, Patterson Hood of Drive-By Truckers, Michael Lachowski of Pylon, Phelan Lavelle of Shade and Crunchy, Andrew Rieger of Elf Power, Art Rosenbaum, Thayer Sarrano, Dave Schools of Widespread Panic, Bob Sleppy of Nuçi’s Space, Michael Stipe of R.E.M., Jason Thrasher, Beth Hall Thrasher, Graham Ulicny of Reptar and Cindy Wilson of the B-52s. Athens musicians who make an appearance on the Georgia music compilation CD that accompanies the issue include Drive-By Truckers, Pylon, Ruby the Rabbitfoot, R.E.M. (on an Indigo Girls cut) and Futurebirds.
Earlier in the evening on the 9th, Avid Bookshop in Athens hosts an Oxford American Georgia Music Issue Reading with OA editors and local contributors. The reading takes place from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. at 493 Prince Avenue.
