Matador Records’ True Panther Sounds imprint, in conjunction with Atlanta Awful Records, has released the new Princess EP from Atlanta-based songwriter, producer, singer and occasional rapper ABRA.
Drawing on the sounds of electro-funk, ’80s pop and R&B (for starters), ABRA wrote, produced and performed the entirety of Princess (aside from the feature from fellow Awful up-and-comer, Vancouver’s Tommy Genesis, on the track “Big Boi”), often in the solitude of her bedroom closet. Born in New York and raised in South London by her missionary parents before landing in Atlanta, ABRA was an introverted youth who found musical inspiration through the internet. The early tracks she posted online on SoundCloud, including acoustic covers of Gucci Mane and 2 Chainz songs, attracted the attention of Atlanta’s outsider-rap Awful Records crew, who took her under their wings and have featured her on various recordings. In 2015, she released an online album titled Rose. Princess is available in both physical and digital formats.
The “darkwave duchess,” as playfully she calls herself, has been playing a handful of European live dates this summer, including sold out shows in Warsaw and London. She plays Atlanta’s Masquerade on Thursday, July 28th.
