It’s been over 40 years since Gram Parsons’ rather legendary passing in the California desert, and 19 since a group of fans founded a music festival and gathering in the Georgia city where the late singer/songwriter grew up. The 19th Annual Gram Parsons Guitar Pull and Tribute Festival will be held Sept. 23 and 24 at the Okefeenokee Fairgrounds in Waycross. Weekend passes are only $40 and RV and tent camping are available.
Performers in 2016 include Nancy Northrup, Skeeter Trucker, Susan Hall, Ross Pead & the Cypress Knees, Toni Brown & Ed Munson, Back City Woods, Donna Frost, Micahlan Boney & The Pig Eyed Daddys, Kellie Parr, Laurel Lee & the Escapees, Deepwell, Hearts on Fire, Fred Kopp, Coleman Gentry, Sundowner Motel, Pine Box Dwellers, Ty Manning, Marlin Brackett & His Hillbilly Bruzers, Hickory Wind, Abby Owens, James Scott Bullard, Crabgrass Cowboys, Dakota Dodge, David Kraai, Greg Henderson & the Way Outs, Jughead and Devils In Disguise.
A component of the festival is the 4th Annual Gram Parsons Guitar Pull Songwriting Contest, with songs judged on their merit as representative of Gram Parsons’s musical legacy. Entries will be accepted through midnight Aug. 31, 2016 and may be emailed to email@example.com and firstname.lastname@example.org. Original songs will be judged on originality, melody, lyrics, and relevance to the criteria, and not on production or performance. Professional songwriters, publishers, or other music industry professionals will judge all contest entries. All decisions by judges will be final.
Five finalists will be selected to perform at Mudville Grille, 3105 Beach Boulevard in Jacksonville, Florida on Sept 14, 2016. Finalists will be allowed to play two original songs live without the aid of recorded backup. A panel of judges will make the final decision. The winner will win a performance slot at the Annual Gram Parsons Guitar Pull and Tribute Festival Sept. 23-24, 2016 at the Okefenokee Fairgrounds in Waycross, Georgia plus one free guest pass.
